so, i’ve had my 360 for more than year and i’ve been having problems with it from the beginning. i’ll be playing for 5 minutes, or an hour or two, and it gives me the "disc is unreadable" error message. it happens over and over and over, and it pisses me off so much. my games always work on my friend’s 360’s fine for hours on end, but not on mine! i think it might be an overheating problem (even thought it’s in an open space) or the disc drive is a defective (thompson) drive (LULZ). well, i’m considering call microsoft, but i was wondering. I got my 360 off ebay, and i dont think it came with a warranty, and i don’t have the box. would i be able to send my xbox in and get it looked at or fixed, even without a warranty?

From this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Fk_4nIKK3E he says that if you overheat it, and let it cool it should work. How does it help? Does overheating it make it forget about all the other problems? He says that overheating it isn’t good for your Xbox, so how is it any good?

I think it’s something about melting a piece back onto one of the chips (I’m not positive). However, I’ve seen some people try it and I’m fairly certain that it didn’t work for any of them.

What can I do to keep my Xbox 360 from overheating?

After about 10 minutes of play, my Xbox overheats. (The two red lights on the Ring of Light) I have tried just about everything on the Xbox website and online game forums. My Xbox is no longer under warranty and I cannot afford the repair. Any suggestions or cheap repair options would be great. Thanks!

Is the fan workn?
If it is overheating that often, then the fan is broken, a bunch of dust is in there, or something else is going coo-coo.

First make sure fan is workn? If so, make sure you got lots of space around the xbox, 6" on all sides and have it in the lay down postion, not up right.
You could also aim a big box fan onto it, it keeps it a tad cooler like that.

I suggest that since the warranty is up, you read a how-to on how to take the xbox apart, and just vacuum it out, remove all dust. and see if the fan is spinning (you should tell even without taking it apart)
If it still overheats, then you need to read a how-to on how to put more heatsink compound on the CPU and GPU, most likely that will fix your issue.
It is true you can brake your xbox but only if you do something dumb. Taking out a GPU and CPU heatsink is really easy

And the best part is, the heatsink paste is like 2.99$ at any computer store, pretty dang cheap fix.
If you need the screwdrivers, add another 5$ for parts. In all you need 2 sizes, and a butter knife

Does all the new Xbox 360 Slims have overheating problems?

Ive heard a few people have overheating problems, but does anyone know its just certain ones or do all of them have it?

Mine works Great! Great Connection MW2! absolutely no over heating problem!

I’m so sick of this Xbox 360 overheating!?

I got a new Xbox 360 a little more than a week ago. My old one broke (disc tray problem), and now I’m already having problems. I never had overheating problems in the past, but now I am. The back of the console is getting hot after 5 minutes (as opposed to about an hour with my old one). It’s NOT because of placement and lack of ventilation, because I put it in the EXACT same position as my old one and changed nothing. Today, I felt the box (power supply) and I realized that was also hot. Could that be the problem? Does anyone know what’s going on?

It really depends where it is, Mine never over heats it can go for 14 hours

Mines never overheaded, Id say either your xclamp is coming loose, Or is in an inclosed area

Will the installing of games on xbox 360 prevent overheating?

I read alot about if you install the games on the xbox 360 hard drive, it will become quieter because the game disc will spin less? will that help prevent overheating?

No, overheating has to do with the hardware and what kind of environment your 360 is located in. Installing games merely makes load times faster, as it will retrieve the data that is installed onto your hard drive instead of the disc.

If your 360 overheats and it gets a RRoD, it is most likely due to the fact that you have either placed it in an area with little ventilation/on a carpet, or your 360 has an old motherboard with parts that have a high likelyhood of melting.

With the new slim 360s, however, the hardware is no longer an issue, and overheating should not occur altogether.

Xbox overheating problems?

I have an xbox 360 and whenever I turn it on it freezes. It does not appear to be an overheating problem because I do not get any red rings and the xbox is never hot, so I have no idea what the problem is. If I leave it off for about a day it lasts 2 minutes but never more than that. I am going to return it to microsoft and get a new one but if there is any way to fix it without having to send it in please tell me. Any feedback is welcome.

ive had the same problem with my xbox 360 and i asked on here and i ended up sending it in anyways. its a better and safer bet then risking your xboxs life even more than it already is.

Good tips to keep your xbox 360 from overheating?

I want to get a cooling fan, but I heard that that can give red ring. I have the xbox pro, my xbox is vertical on a hardwood floor and not surrounded by other things. Any tips would help but I am not willing to spend over $30.

I have an Xbox with Jasper Chipset which has almost resolved the rrod issue. Xbox Pro doesn’t have jasper chipset, so you must take care of your console.

Here are some tips I think all xbox owners can use:

I recommend you always install the games you will play most onto the hard drive; not only the xbox runs quieter, but you will also increase the life of your disc by preventing the scratches as the game will run from the hdd.

Also keep the xbox horizontal as… the vertical in the advertisements is vertical mainly for aesthetic reasons..otherwise microsoft recommends it horizontal. It avoids being knocked down by mistake by kids or anyone.. And reduces the chances of disk scratches cause if you think about it.. horizontal way is a obvious or natural way to keep it. I wonder how many of those xbox owners who kept their xbox vertically and got red ring of death noticed that there is a ventilation on the right side… which when you keep vertically.. get faced down and blocked. o.O

(microsoft is partly to blame for advertising it vertically, but at the end of the day users should read the manuals and learn to take care of their electronics)

One important point is not to move the xbox or dangle it in the air when the disc is spinning inside. There is a sticker on the disc tray ‘Do not move when disc n tray’. But some stupid people can’t read the sticker in front of their eyes and dangle the xbox in the air, which will damage the disc. (one recent example was a dumbass at E3 who literally dangled it with Alan Wake game inside ). I don’t see any reason why would anyone be dumb enough do that, unless they’re dumb haha.

And of’course keep it on a hard surface. Keep in a clean, clutter-free environment. Keep in a open space, not in a cabinet where there’s no ventilation.

PS: Oh if you could trade it with the game store for the new xbox slim, go for it. or if you already have bought a lot of accessories i imagine it’s probably not worth getting rid of the expensive accessories you already bought. coz new xbox slim comes with 250GB and built in wifi, plus with great bundles on offer. the problem is the old hardrive won’t fit in the new xbox slim. and with built in wifi, i wouldn’t have the heart to throw that external wifi adapter. LoL. But in that case, because xbox elite and arcade prices now have gone down, at the least you can try to replace you Pro with an Arcade with Jasper chipset in it.

As long as you take care of it, you’ll be a happy gamer:)

Ignore The City, he is just an angry child who doesnt like Xbox. Every post or question he has about the xbox is negative, he cant be taken seriously.

The new xbox has a huge fan and vent over the GPU now and has a sensor to turn the system off before it overheats. There is no way the dumbass above me has a new slim that overheated in 3 hours unless he tried very hard to do so my putting it in a box or wrapping it up while playing.

I have the new Xbox and a PS3 slim and the new Xbox actually puts out less heat than the slim, it is a great new design and I havnt had a single problem since I bought it.

Xbox 360 Overheating Question?

I have an Xbox 360 Elite. And out of no where it just starts overheating after an hour of gameplay, WTF! My xbox has its own little table to itself, no vents are blocked, its horizontal, and the power brick also has its own space to breath.
i dont want to do the towel trick and i heard that the fans you can buy for the xbox 360 actually make matters worse.

only thing that comes to mind for me right now it smoke damage, it sounds a lot like what happened to my first 360, if you have smokers in the house try to keep them away from the 360, put walls and doors between the smoke and the system
